Hazel proposes a cheesy poem for Jack’s headstone. Peggy hasn’t the energy to fight it.
Radio Times: Alice looks after her father, and Ruth is resolute.
Characters: Alice, Brian, David, Peggy, Ruth, Tony- Alice bumps into Peggy at Jack’s grave where she is thinking about his headstone. She decides on something simple with no “beloved wife” since then she’d have to include Hazel. Then Alice gets a call from Brian who is being beaten by the new kitchen. Alice goes to try to help him but he is incapable of turning on the grill and is defeated by the induction hob. She has to cook him an omelette.
- Ruth is still pushing the cause of robotic milking and Pip is enthusiastic too. Ruth even wants to go and visit but David doesn’t see the point. Tony arrives to take David to look at a bull and drops the news about the new digester unit. David and Ruth are furious, apparently forgetting they’d have done exactly the same if they could have got away with it.
- Tony can’t decide on the bull. It’s a beautiful animal but can he justify £3000. David thinks it’s worth it but Tony, having bought an entire herd of cows on a whim, can’t decide. He finally decides to sleep on it and talk it over with Pat.
- Alice goes round to tea with Peggy. Peggy says she’d telephoned Hazel to check the wording for the headstone but Hazel has taken the matter into her own hands. She has chosen some sort of cheesy poem but Peggy is reluctant to challenge her. Alice says she must. She is the one who visits the grave; she doesn’t want to be sitting next to some ghastly bit of doggerel. Peggy says she can’t face it.
- Ruth has been talking to Usha about the compensation they might get if Plan B goes ahead. David says he refuses to think about it but Ruth is insistent that if they want the children to have any future on the farm, they have to be able to keep it going, road or no road.
