Ian makes progress with Brian. Lilian makes progress with Alice.

Characters: Adam, Brian, Ian, Kate, Lilian

• Lilian and Alice go for a ride together, and Lilian’s banter soon has Alice laughing again. She tells her aunt that she’s definitely going ahead with her plans to join the RAF.
• Adam’s gloomy because the rain has spoilt the maize maze and they can’t get started on the harvest. But Ruaridh has come over to play, and both Adam and Ian enjoy seeing him so happy.
• Alice tells Lilian that Alan is finding life hard with two teenage girls in the house, just as she’s finding the habits of Grey Gables guests hard to take. Just then Brian sweeps into the drive, and spooks Lilian’s horse. Alice seizes the opportunity to take both horses back to the stables, thereby avoiding any conversation with Brian. Lilian seeks refuge in a Gin and Tonic.
• Adam runs Ruaridh back to Home Farm, and offers to take him to the park on his afternoon off. Brian rejects the offer quite rudely, but Ian stands his ground, pointing out how happy Ruaridh is with them. When Ruaridh pleads to be allowed to go, Brian has to back down.
