  • At Grange Farm, Mike finds Ed preparing the herd for sale. A good job having been done, they agree to meet at the pancake races at The Bull after the market. Just then, the cattle lorry arrives.
  • In the village shop, Jim quizzes Kenton about his impending trip to Australia and whether Fallon is ready to take the helm at The Bull. Kenton is confident that she is. Jim confirms that the SAVE team will be attending the pancake races. Lynda arrives just in time to be mortified by Kenton’s news that The Echo and Radio Borsetshire will be there from two o’clock to catch Jennifer’s speech.
  • At the market, Ed shows Eddie the cheque raised by the sale of his cows. His father praises Ed for managing to hang on in for as long as he did. Kenton, as MC, is heard announcing a break for refreshments, to be followed by a speech by the “Boudica of Borsetshire”, Jennifer Aldridge. Lynda’s mortification is heightened by Jennifer seemingly hogging centre stage.
  • “Boudica” meanwhile asks Mike to give Roy the news that Phoebe will continue to stay with her at Home Farm, for the time being. Ed turns up bearing a cheque for Mike’s share of the sale of the cows. Mike offers grudging thanks, after a fashion.
  • Jennifer’s speech is a resounding success. With the rallying cry of “No to Route B, no to the Road” (and much applause} ringing in her ears, Lynda scurries off to buttonhole a reporter from the Westbury Courier, to offer a more “thoughtful” view of the current state of affairs.
  • Ed asks Mike how the planned move to Birmingham is going and wonders if it really is strictly necessary. Is there nowhere in Borsetshire that could provide for Beth’s educational needs? Mike is clearly taken aback. No, of course not. It’s too late to change plans now. It would be akin to David and Ruth pulling the plug on their move to Northumberland. Unimaginable!
