Jennifer receives Brian’s news badly. Siobhán puts things right with Elizabeth.
Radio Times: Jennifer finds out who her friends are.
Characters: Adam, Brian, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Nigel, Siobhán- Brian anxiously calls Siobhán to see how she is. He has not yet had chance to speak to Jennifer. Siobhán is not putting him under pressure; he must decide when and how to broach the subject. He would come over to see her but she is going to see an old friend.
- Nigel and Elizabeth are surprised to have received two calls already from prospective guides; they thought the advert was insignificant. When Siobhán arrives in a taxi, Nigel’s initial annoyance disappears when they see her face and realise that she is ill. She has come to put things right while there is still time.
- When Jennifer returns home Brian is waiting. She is annoyed when he tells her that he saw Siobhán yesterday evening and furious when he explains about Ruairidh – how dare he ask such a thing.
- Meanwhile Siobhán is installed at Lower Loxley; Nigel has been to the hotel to retrieve her things. She admits that Nigel had been right; it was her fault that they had fallen out. But if she is to leave the party early, she would like to leave her friends on good terms. Elizabeth assures her that any falling out is trivial now.
- Adam finds his mother in tears in an out-building. She explains what that evil bitch wants, which would involve letting the whole world know about Brian’s affair. She is not sorry that Siobhán is dying. Adam whisks her away to Honeysuckle cottage without giving Brian chance to speak to her again. He should not expect her back soon.
