Jennifer soothes Pip’s humiliation and Adam is uncompromising with Charlie.
Radio Times: Jennifer offers some womanly wisdom, and Charlie is left high and dry.
Characters: Adam, Charlie, Jennifer, Phoebe, Pip, Rex- Rex, Adam and Pip attend the farm exhibits and are excited to view everything from machinery to livestock. Adam slips away to avoid seeing Charlie when he turns up.
- Jennifer visits Phoebe in her room. Jennifer admits that she knows the story about Kate’s run-in with Phoebe and Alex. Jennifer tells Phoebe she is mature and what happens between her and Alex is their business. Jenny just wants to listen. Phoebe is distraught and says she and Alex had planned out a beautiful evening and wanted it to be special. Alex hadn’t pressured her and they waited until after her 17th birthday. Kate managed to spoil everything and it can never be put right, now. Jenny reassures Phoebe and helps her put events in perspective. Has Alex contacted her? Yes, he has texted and wants to meet but Phoebe is worried he wants to break up. Jenny stresses if he really cares about Phoebe, that seems unlikely. Phoebe seems comforted.
- Rex would like to buy a tractor but tells Pip that he is going to wait for years to save up. Very different than his brother then, notes Pip laughingly. She indicates she knows that Toby’s excuse for not attending the exhibit is less than convincing. She and Rex talk about their hopes for the future, both personally and professionally.
- Phoebe finds Jennifer weeding in the garden to tell her that all seems fine with Alex. For the first time in days, Phoebe is happy and positive about the future. Jenny confides that she does understand; she confides her experiences when falling pregnant with Adam when unmarried. The village shunned her and Jenny’s father threatened to turn her out. Paddy, Adam’s father, was Jennifer’s first lover, too. Jenny waves the olive branch a bit when she mentions Kate was young when she had Phoebe as well. Jennifer ends with an expression of confidence in Phoebe’s determination to be ‘sensible’ which seems to mean using a reliable method of birth control. Jennifer suggests that Phoebe talk to a GP about the best methods.
- Adam and Charlie talk about the maize contract. After this year’s harvest, Adam won’t be growing any more maize on the farm; his decision is firm. Charlie is shocked and notes that Adam is leaving him short. Charlie thought they were friends; what about Adam keeping his word? Charlie ends the uncomfortable situation by stating that he trusted Adam to be straight with him, but it just shows how wrong Charlie was.
