Jill will return to live at Brookfield, while the Grundys are given notice to quit Keeper’s Cottage.

Radio Times: Jill is very much missed, and the Grundys try to keep their chins up.

  • One of Ruth’s favourite sweaters has shrunk in the wash which David shows to Eddie when he pops by to ask if he is needed for tomorrow’s milking. David thinks he has temporarily concealed the offending clothing but Ruth arrives and spots it, triggering more upset. She and David agree that they cannot continue with the house in such disarray now that Emma has left. Ruth cannot even celebrate the discovery of her mother’s life assurance policy, worth £200K.
  • Joe bends Jill’s ear over Elizabeth’s geese order and urges her to persuade Elizabeth to cancel her order if she has any influence. Clarrie’s arrival and discussion of Keepers Cottage is a welcome interruption. Joe is more pessimistic than Eddie over the sales of the turkeys, calling this the Grundys’ annus horribilis, with homelessness, the theft of Ed’s cows and now commercial competition from the Fairbrothers. As Eddie urges him to keep his chin up, Clarrie delivers yet more bad news in the form of two months’ notice on Keepers Cottage from Hazel Woolley.
  • David is on the point of advertising for a new housekeeper but Ruth stops him. She later visits Jill, who says she’s also been trying to catch Ruth. Ruth confides how much she is grieving and that she feels all is falling apart at Brookfield. She feels selfish for asking, but wants Jill to return permanently, not only for practical help but she misses Jill. An overwhelmed and tearful Jill immediately agrees to move back.
