  • Alice loved the bells, rung in honour of her and her husband. Now she seizes the chance to catch up with Amy.
  • Shula has organised a picnic on Lakey Hill to celebrate her birthday and of course Kenton’s, though she is rather worried that Kenton and Kathy are having a row.
  • Amy is to continue her training nearer to home, at the Borchester birthing clinic. Alice thinks that will be ideal for when she has her baby. She is amused that some might feel she had a shotgun wedding. Cousin Helen was shocked, though Alice remarks unkindly that she is letting herself go, putting on weight. Little does she know.
  • Kathy and Kenton are indeed at each other’s throats; they agree they must talk but now is not the time. Shula and Alistair consider intervening but it’s Jim who takes the bull by the horns – well, the cow actually. Dismissing Kenton he talks sympathetically to Kathy about her own grief; she has lost a friend but is not quite in the inner circle of mourners; she needs to take a step back. She had hoped Kenton would be more supportive; Jim thinks he would be if he could find the way – and Kathy would let him.
  • Jennifer needs Alice’s input to the party arrangements, beyond inviting half the county. They agree on a barbecue. Jennifer had better let Susan know.
  • Alistair wonders if Jamie would like to go to nets; Kathy suggests that the invitation would be better coming from Alistair. Jim explains to Kenton that he administered kind words from an impartial bystander. Kenton fears he doesn’t have Jim’s magic touch.
