Josh seems to be digging a deep hole; Toby and Pip seem to be very cosy; Ed’s business plans look set for a trial.

Radio Times: Emma puts her foot down and Josh is brought back down to earth

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • David mentions to Josh that Pip may be returning to work shortly, though he thinks that it may be too soon. Josh wants to get off early to go the farm machinery sale. David doesn’t sound keen but agrees that he’s worked well on the farm. He lets him go, providing that he’s back by two o’clock.
  • At the sale, Eddie is waiting with Ed for Josh. Ed tells him of his plans for the Texels and how Emma isn’t that keen. Eddie reckons he only needs some luck with a couple of lambs and his boat will come in big time. As Ed leaves, Josh turns up and he and Eddie go off to see the bikes. Eddie has already selected several which may be of interest. Josh says he needs four or five. The first he sees is superb. It must go on his list.
  • Toby makes an unexpected call on Pip, bearing chocolates and grapes. Had she known she would have made an effort to improve her appearance. Toby reckons that she doesn’t look as bad as she thought she would. The gin business is going well, her investment looks reasonably safe. Something he says makes her laugh and she begs him not to do it again. It hurts.
  • Ed is on the phone to Emma, explaining how some exhibitors are suggesting that he should try artificial insemination with six of his ewes. It shouldn’t cost more than £600. Emma can’t believe her ears. His idea of using Caroline’s bequest is sheer folly. Then Ed’s phone battery fails, just as Eddie turns up to meet Josh. He pushes off, leaving Eddie to report on the bikes. They all seem sound and they come from good homes, say the auctioneers. Josh confides that the first machine stands to make him £1500 if he sells to Adam. “Not too shabby,” says Eddie, who mentions yet again his “finder’s fee.”
  • At home, Ed tries to convince Emma that AI is the way to go with his sheep. He’s fed up of being a slave to others. He compares himself to Josh and his apparent business success. He suggests using the money that they have saved for a house deposit and pay it back out of the bequest when it comes through. He just can’t see the point if he doesn’t. She eventually agrees that he needs an aim in life and agrees to treating three ewes for £300. He’s over the moon. “Happy birthday Ed” she calls out.
  • Toby spots the bracelet he bought Pip and fastens it on her wrist. They’re having a fine time though she admits to worrying about starting work. She wonders what the next disaster will be. Toby tells her to have more faith in herself. Elsewhere, David can’t believe that Josh has made four purchases with no money in the bank. Also, the chap who sold his loader to Josh has been round to Brookfield looking for his money. Josh apologises but David tells him in no uncertain terms that it’s no way to run a business; he won’t always be lucky. Josh promises that it won’t happen again.
