  • Peggy finds Jenny preparing lights for Kate’s opening shindig, and offers to help. Talk turns to yesterday’s hearing. Peggy says that Carol thought Anna was very low when she got home. Jenny thought that Pat and Tony were very upset, but at least Helen managed to keep custody of Jack. Jenny comments that Kate only gave Phoebe money whereas Roy and Hayley gave her a bracelet. Before more can be said, Kate arrives with a litany of complaints. Arrangements are falling apart and no one seems to care!
  • Pip and Rex arrive in Hampshire with their load of heifers. They have clearly enjoyed the journey. As they go to check on the cattle, the farmer appears. Straight faces both! Meanwhile, Kate phones Roy to check on the catering. Realising that he has no intention of attending tonight, a few moments of whining do the trick. He’ll be there at 7.30. She hangs up and greets her mother and Peggy who have prepared the dining area. Alice’s choice of mood music doesn’t go down well with Kate. She thinks that the first track, “Nelly the Elephant”, is inappropriate. Well done Alice I say!
  • The journey back from Hampshire doesn’t start well for Rex. The farmer knew Matthew and he had been pivotal in saving his farm when he had been ill. An all-round good egg. Rex tries to divert Pip’s conversation away from the subject of her wonderful “ex” but with little luck. He just had to agree, through clenched teeth, that Matthew was a truly amazing guy.
  • Kate and Jenny share a moment as the event gets underway. Jenny spots Toby approaching and steers him away, leaving Kate to have a word with Roy. With the sound of Murdo giving bongo lessons in the background, she thanks Roy for his help with the catering. Just then, he spots the press arriving. Kate launches into marketing mode. Elsewhere, Toby urges Rex not to give up on Pip. Spotting Dorothy, yes … Dan’s girlfriend, Toby chances his luck and moves on over. Rex is joined by Roy and Pip. Fresh from the tarot reader, she explains that she’s going to meet a tall, dark … well, you can guess the rest.
  • Jennifer buttonholes Kate to tell her what a good job she’s done. Pip joins them and offers her good wishes too. As the others make plans to head home, Kate decides to stay up until dawn. Jenny suggests that she should ask Rex to join her. Pip agrees. He declines but insists that they must take a look at Lynda on the bongos.
  • The lucky guy chosen to stay up with Kate is … Roy. They enjoy a glass of wine together with a backdrop of the dawn chorus. They regret Phoebe’s absence and Kate admits that she’s not been the best mother in history. Without Roy, she wonders, just how would things have turned out? Time to drink a toast. Glasses clink … “to Phoebe” declares Roy.
