  • Lynda gently ribs Lilian about her knitting expertise which will be spotlighted in a knitting demonstration at the village fete. Ruth notes that her consultation with the local MP is useless because he won’t choose sides. Jim is disparaging about claims of impartiality.
  • Harrison Burns stops to help an irritable Fallon with her stalled van.
  • Lilian takes Peggy for a shop in Borchester. Peggy counsels honesty about Lilian’s complete incompetence when it comes to knitting. Madame Desfarge is mentioned.
  • For the film protesting the road through Ambridge, Jim reads a poem about a local wood threatened by industrialisation and notes that the proposed road would have the same devastating effects on the landscape. Lynda stops filming to listen to bird song; Ruth and Jim note that their efforts would allow birds to continue to flourish. T-shirts and mugs in support of resistance have arrived in the village shop but Susan seems more interested in spreading gossip about Carol and John Tregorran than in selling merchandise against the local road.
  • Lilian tells Peggy that she plans to wear a brace to support her claim of tendonitis; she will be able to escape any demonstrations in this way. When Peggy points out that Lilian would have to wear a brace for far longer than would be convenient, Lilian decides to buy knitted goods to submit as her own work. Peggy is discouraging but her comments remain unheard by the determined Lilian.
  • Harrison invites Fallon for dinner on Saturday evening. Fallon tries to substitute a karaoke evening for a stuffy meal but Constable Burns notes a disturbance on the road ahead. Jill, Ruth and Jim are challenged forcefully by a local landowner over their filming. He supports the road because he will be paid for the right of way. Harrison intervenes but Ruth notes ruefully that not everyone is on their side of the issue.
