  • Lilian enjoys Paris even though her shoes are unsuitable for sightseeing. Somehow she has forgotten her mobile, but Matt dissuades her from phoning Brenda to check that all is well with Amside.
  • Jim and Chris do some recycling together. Chris is sorry for Jazzer, who will be evicted if he fails to find a flatmate soon. Chris has decided to audition for Lynda’s play. Jim has decided not to write for Borchester Life, but some devious talk by Chris of its being beneath such an academic seems to have sown the seeds of changing his mind.
  • Fallon calls on Rhys and is keen to find out more about him. She looks at his DVD collection and decides he is a softie at heart. He mentions going home for a week soon, so Fallon offers to make him a playlist for the train journey. Like Chris, Fallon has decided to audition for the play. Rhys says he will come and support her.
  • Ed’s birthday drinks get under way. A chance remark from Joe causes Jim to toy with the idea of adapting Dickens’ Hard Times as an alternative to Lynda’s Shakespeare. Joe is appalled at the idea of Shakespearian comedy.
  • Matt and Lilian have a wonderful meal, and Matt talks expansively of being in the right place at the right time with the right person. He tells Lilian how much he loves her, and hopes he is forgiven for the Walters’ situation. Matt is all for going on to a jazz club, but Lilian suggests a romantic early night instead.
