Matt has some interesting information for Tom. Justin has some advice for James.

Radio Times: Justin smooths the way. Matt sticks his oar in

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Like a sulky teenager, James insists that his mother drive him to Felpersham to pick his car up. Because she has other plans for the day, Lilian refuses, but manages to force Justin’s hand and make him ferry James. Justin is less than pleased, finding James irritating and boring, but he has little choice.
  • Anxious to press ahead with plans for Bridge Farm, Tom has been trying unsuccessfully to contact Justin to make an appointment to talk things through. Justin tells him to ring Anthea, claiming untruthfully to have ‘Singapore on the other line.’ Doing as he is told, Tom succeeds only in reaching Anthea’s voicemail.
  • Kirsty calls by as she and Tom have agreed to spend time together on the date their baby was to be born, and overhears the tail-end of Tom’s call. She presses him for details, but he will not be drawn. As they set off for a walk, Kirsty lets Tom know how she feels about Justin’s plans for the village. She will do all she can to oppose the pig unit. Tom seems keener than previously to side with Justin. Kirsty accuse him of being under the spell of powerful men with no principles, which Tom hotly denies. Angry with Tom’s apparent lack of principles, Kirsty storms off, just as Tom’s phone rings.
  • Far from being Justin or even Anthea on the line, it is Matt, whom Tom has no wish to engage in conversation, but when he realises that matt knows all about the housing plans, Tom reluctantly agrees to meet him in Edgely. When he does, matt informs the gullible Tom that several of his friends would be prepared to offer one and a half million for land Justin wants. Matt will put Tom in touch if he likes.
  • Justin duly prepares to run James into Felpersham, but they encounter Matt, whose Bentley arouses much envy in James. he accuses Matt of frittering his mother’s money on it, and very soon tempers are aroused. Justin sternly orders James to the car, and tells Matt in no uncertain terms to stop behaving like a child in the playground where all he does is to embarrass himself. As Matt feebly protests, Justin informs him that what affects Lilian affects him too. Matt’s behaviour is unacceptable. He needs a bit of class.
  • Justin gives James a lecture on the need to patch things up with Leonie and to consider Mungo. James is not minded to listen until Justin suggests that a little financial help might not come amiss. James takes the bait and is quickly packing the car to return to London. Did you offer an incentive? asks Lilian. No, just advice, lies Justin.
