Matthew visits Brookfield to tell Pip they must split up because their careers mean too much.
Radio Times: It’s a big day at Home Farm, and Pip has a visitor.
Characters: Adam, David, Josh, Matthew, Pip, Ruth- Pip is nervous about Matthew coming for a visit. Josh doesn’t know why since he dumped her. He keeps teasing her and Ruth tells him to shut up. She changes the subject by wondering if she can send Helen flowers.
- Pip is moving the cattle onto Home Farm land. Even Jennifer is interested. Adam gives Pip a lecture on the history of moving cattle. He also mentions Brian and Will’s concern about the elf grotto having an effect on the pheasants. Josh still doesn’t think there is money in herbal leys. Adam and Pip are more confident. But they know it is an exciting experiment.
- David and Ruth are worried Pip is staking too much on the visit from Matthew. David doesn’t think he’ll have changed his mind, just that there are things he will want to say in person. Ruth doesn’t think Pip will want to hear them.
- The meeting with Matthew including Ruth and David is rather stilted. Matthew does seem happy to hang around for a bit and finally they leave to be alone. David thinks he does want to finish with Pip but Ruth thinks Matthew should try to find a job nearby. David thinks he might have found someone else.
- Pip and Matthew go to see the cows. She apologises for the way she behaved when he arrived. She was confused about why he had come. He tells her that she is a great farmer and doing something important. But he finished with her they because are both too committed to their jobs. Matthew doesn’t think it will work. Pip thinks they can work it – she’d give up anything to be with him. But Matthew wouldn’t want her to. Nor would she if he gave up his work for her. Pip insists she’d give up Brookfield but Matthew doesn’t believe it. She can’t say he is wrong.
