• Passing Keeper’s Cottage, Ruth leaves a message with Joe to ask if Eddie can do the milking on Wednesday afternoon. She learns that Eddie has an invitation to meet William’s new girlfriend on Thursday, so he could not do it then.
• Phoebe has gone fishing with Mike, giving Roy and Hayley some time together. She reveals that Mike has arranged another date, this time via Lonely Hearts in the Echo, though he needed a bit of education about the short-hand; so does Roy, who was initially horrified by the idea. Anyway, Mike is meeting Marion on Friday.
• Clarrie and Eddie return from Aunt Hilda’s funeral with different views of it. For Eddie, a force 10 gale takes the edge off the fun of being by the sea.
• Phoebe has caught a fine specimen but the smell of it sends Hayley away in a hurry. How to explain this to Mike without telling him of her pregnancy is a dilemma. Impossible. He thinks it is the best news in the world. Phoebe will be over the moon; she has just told Mike that all her relatives are on the other side of the world. But she mustn’t be told until it is certain.
• Joe relays the news of William’s invitation to meet Nic. Eddie’s excuse of milking at Brookfield is quickly stamped upon: Ruth wants him to do Wednesday. Clarrie is anxious that William is not making another big mistake. Joe thinks the lad can’t win.
