Mother-daughter bonding is not as easy as Kate thought. Life with a wealthy businessman is not what Lilian thought. The offer of a surrogate is not quite what Adam thought.

Radio Times: Adam tries not to seem ungrateful

  • Tensions are in the air in Ambridge. Kate wants Noluthando to admire her Spiritual Home enterprise; Noluthando is less than impressed by the cold, the mud, the sound of deer rutting and the fact that she has to wait for a Reiki session to finish before she can see Kate’s barn conversion. Only the suggestion of a shopping trip cheers her – and Felpersham will not do; it must be London.
  • Similar tensions manifest themselves at the Dower House as Justin packs for his trip to Edinburgh. He tries to cheer Lilian by offering to buy her a new dress for the Hunt Ball, but this falls very flat. Lilian is annoyed that the ‘short trip’ has now become a rather longer one. Maybe next time she might come and they could go on to a few days in the Highlands, suggests Justin. Why not this time? replies Lilian. Justin is forced to fumble for an answer. But he wants Lilian to sign the form agreeing to move Amside under the Damara umbrella. Strangely, Lilian seems quite reluctant. I love you, Lilian, declares Justin. And I love you replies Lilian, wistfully.
  • Noluthando charges Kate with having abandoned her and Sipho. Kate blusters ineffectually, but Noluthando definitely has the upper hand, reminding Kate that she does Skype Phoebe, so knows only too well that Kate’s excuse about Phoebe needing her is a lie. Luckily for Kate, Adam appears, and Noluthando returns to the house.
  • Kate first asks Adam if he thinks Brian will cover the cost of the shopping trip, and then congratulates him on the surrogacy idea; she knows the joys of motherhood, having had three children. Then comes the bombshell. Kate is willing to be the surrogate. After all, she is a vegan and does lots of yoga. Adam is totally lost for words.
