  • Now here’s a poser for Neil: should Emma buy more expensive nappies here in the village shop or drive to the supermarket. Sensing the difficulties that lie behind the question he offers £20. It is declined, though Neil is allowed to buy the nappies and his invitation to tea is accepted. Joe arrives in the shop sporting a new set of teeth; they are dazzlingly noticeable – enough to set Keira crying.
  • Help! Freddie is falling behind with his work as a result of being off school, so Elizabeth seeks some extra maths tuition from Iftikar; it never was his strongest subject. Ifty is agreeable in principle – if Freddie would be a willing pupil. They fix a date for him to come and talk to them both. Emma, who has stepped into a breach at Lower Loxley today, would like more such work; Elizabeth has to say no because they are having to tighten their belts.
  • In the event, Ed doesn’t join Emma for tea because he has urgent work to do. She gratefully accepts her father’s offer of the food Ed would have eaten, though denies that there are any problems.
  • David and Neil exchange tales of Joe’s teeth – his second best, apparently – so when Joe appears in The Bull it is an effort to keep a straight face. He is a bit evasive about where the others went: it was being with apples that got then smashed to smithereens – but then again, they might not have been smashed at all. Eh? When he has gone they ponder the connection with apples and wonder about where the teeth might have gone; they decide that it’s probably best not to think about it.
