  • Angry Kate sounds off to Nolunthando about Jennifer’s unreasonable behaviour, but Nolunthando is not listening. She wants to watch a music video. When Kate sees what she is watching, she is appalled – it promotes patriarchal conditioning. Nolunthando should open her mind to the wider realm of experience. Assuming this means Spiritual Home matters, Noluthando firmly rejects the idea. Kate then suggests a visit to Lower Loxley, an idea which does not appeal greatly, but Noluthando agrees to go for an hour.
  • Shula is still panicking about the ball arrangements, so is going to see if Elizabeth has any ideas. Alistair is at last able to catch up on paperwork thanks to the arrival of Graham to take Anisha’s place, but his respite is interrupted by a call from one of his equine clients, Sal.
  • Freddie and Lily are delighted to see Noluthando, and want to hear about Durban. Lily shows off her superior understanding of family relationships, African politics and various other things. The talk turns to the Hunt ball, which causes Kate to hold forth vehemently on the matter of hunting, but Noluthando is keen to go to the ball. Lily informs her that she needs to buy a new dress; the one she bought in London simply won’t do. Noluthando puts Lily
  • Pip calls on Toby with some beef sandwiches and cake. His gin business is going really well, and he hopes to repay Pip some of her loan after Christmas. Pip claims that she is too embarrassed about the bruising to her face to go out; Toby assures her that she looks wonderful, and that any man would be proud to spend time with her. Pip misinterprets this and makes a move on Toby, who is horrified. He is only just over her. Desperately embarrassed, Pip says she had better leave. Yes, you had, replies Toby.
  • Shula returns to find Alistair is some distress. Sal wanted to know how the horse came to die under anaesthetic. Has Mrs Ramsay been gossiping? Sal is also unhappy about the amount of time Anisha has taken off; she is not happy with Graham, the locum. With a supreme lack of empathy, Shula nags Alistair about ordering a new dinner jacket.
