Peggy goes to remember alone. Lilian finally confronts Matt with his wrongdoing

Radio Times: What is distracting Lilian?

Characters: , , ,
  • Lilian drives Peggy to the Remembrance Service, but her mind is on other matters, and she tells her mother that she has things to do, so won’t be coming to the service. She will pick her up later.
  • As Peggy arrives at church, Alan tells her that Bert has lost his voice so won’t be able to do his reading. Could Peggy step in? Of course; she will be honoured.
  • Lilian’s ‘things to do’ involve Matt, of course. He is packed and ready to leave. Lilian expostulates, but his mind is made up. Seeing there is no time to lose, Lilian decides to confront Matt with what she has discovered. Bit by bit, as Matt tries to wriggle his way out of it, Lilian angrily reveals all that she knows about his fraudulent dealings. After some blustering, Matt finally admits what he is has done, but claims that he did it all for her, so that he could repay her the money that he stole, which, for Lilian, is the last straw. When Matt reminds her that she did consider coming away with him, she turns on him. She is going to inform the police.
  • A broken Matt begs Lilian not to go to the police. He couldn’t face another prison sentence. Thinking, perhaps, of the feelings she once had for him, Lilian agrees to give him an hour’s start; she will then go to the police. Grateful Matt tells Lilian that he loves her.
  • Because Lilian has not turned up as agreed, Peggy has to ask for a lift home. Alan readily agrees, and tells Peggy how grateful he is for her stepping in to read at short notice. He talks about the hit and run accident and its effect on Ambridge. Rumours abound. Peggy agrees wholeheartedly.
  • Very upset, Lilian needs a drink before phoning the police. Nothing new there… She dials 101 and says she wants to report a fraud.
