  • While Jennifer and Lilian plus partners dress up for Peggy’s lunch party, Pat and Tony have muddy leeks to deal with. They muse over the purpose of the party; Tony would like to think he no longer had the mortgage to think about. Pat is more concerned with how they are to tell Peggy about Helen and Rob.
  • Lilian, Matt, Jennifer and Brian assemble at The Lodge where Emma has done sterling work on the food, glad to escape the atmosphere at home over Will, Ed and Holly. As they wait for Pat and Tony to arrive, Brian and Matt consider Jack’s array of souvenirs and memorabilia. Apart from one or two items they have no wish to acquire any of them; they remind Brian of a posh car-boot sale.
  • As she prepares to leave the family to the food, Emma is much put out when Jennifer, at her most condescending, comments that it might be a good idea if Will were to take permanent charge of Holly. After all, he is so good with dogs and knows how to treat them properly. Emma is not unreasonably upset, and tries, albeit weakly, to defend Ed.
  • At last Pat and Tony arrive. Tony loses no time in reminding his siblings that their delayed arrival is because they, unlike Lilian and Jennifer, have to work for a living. Pat has brought some food, as has Jennifer (venison, of course) and while the family move through to the dining room, Peggy reminds Tony of his interest in cars as a child. Maybe he would like Jack’s photo of a racing car.
  • Peggy assures the family that despite Jack leaving a lot to Hazel, he made sure she was well provided for, and in addition she has her own money. She tells her children how proud she is of them for having overcome adversity and making good; she even praises their choice of partner. But since they are all comfortably off, she has decided not to leave her money to them. The Lodge will go to Helen, to ensure that she and Henry always have a roof over their head, and her estate will go to Tom, who has most need and will make the best use of it. In the ensuing shocked silence Peggy asks if anyone would like a fondant fancy.
