  • Theoretically discussing Jennifer’s blog, Kate launches into one of her me, me, me speeches. Phoebe comes into the room to say she is going out. Kate instantly suggests a film at the University followed by a meal. Coldly, Phoebe declines. She has a bus to catch. Able, for once, to see that Kate is at fault, Jennifer points out that forgiveness cannot be bought. Phoebe needs an honest conversation, not endless treats.
  • On his rather dismal birthday, Roy is surprised and delighted to find Phoebe at the door with a birthday card. He asks her in, and she seems shocked at the state of the place. They make awkward conversation, but slowly a thaw in relations can be detected – until Kate’s name comes up, with a painful reminder that Kate, too, has had an affair. Phoebe becomes upset and leaves, with Roy saying he will gladly give her a lift anytime.
  • Mike needs to talk to Ed. Vicky thinks the move to Birmingham is being held up by Mike’s wish to sell the business as a whole – so he has decided to sell the round on its own if necessary. He really has no choice.
  • Phoebe leaves just as Ed comes out of Mike’s house, and Ed gives her a lift home. When she arrives, Kate storms at her for not being back in time for the film. Phoebe points out that she never agreed to go to it. She has no interest in Kate’s happy family fantasy. Kate sneers when she hears that Phoebe has seen Roy. He’s my dad and I’ll do what I want retorts her daughter. As Phoebe slams out, Kate remarks to Jennifer that Roy sets her such a bad example; no wonder she is so upset. Incredulously, Jennifer asks whether Kate can actually hear the words that come out of her mouth.
  • Ed rings Ruth. He needs advice. He really has no idea what he is going to do.
