Pip and Toby agree a mutually beneficial way forward.
Radio Times: Toby finds himself in a tight spot, and Rob’s patience is tested.
Characters: Henry, Pat, Pip, Rob, Toby, Tony, Ursula- Rob is impatient that Tony is a minute or two late for Henry’s handover. Henry has acquired a rusty old bolt from a farm open day that Pat and Tony took him to, with which Rob is singularly unimpressed. Both Rob and Ursula criticise the fact that Henry has only had a picnic for his lunch. Henry has picked up on Helen’s whereabouts and Rob resents the fact that explanations are seemingly being left to him. Rob also broods on the fact that he has never met his own son. Ursula placates him with his input to Henry’s life and the strong role model he is providing. As Rob’s father phones, both Rob and Ursula are reluctant to answer. The upshot of his call is that he is visiting tomorrow, which appears not to strike much joy into either of them.
- Toby has been slow to answer Pip’s calls, so she seeks him out. He is not interested in watching the cricket – or becoming involved romantically. After winding him up with pretending to be devastated, Pip levels with Toby assuring him that he has not shattered her illusions as she is not looking for stability or long-term commitment. They agree to proceed on a pragmatic basis – some fun with no strings attached.
- A doom-laden Tony arrives home. Seeing the kitchen where the events unfolded has given him the creeps and Tony cannot understand how Rob and Ursula continue to live there. He and Pat reflect on Henry’s high energy levels and wonder how Ursula must be coping day in, day out. They muse on having Henry more during the school holidays, if arrangements could be made. Helen has phoned Tom to report she and Jack are doing well and Helen is delighted that her cheese has won the food award.
