  • Oliver rings Ed when he hears about the loss of the cattle. He’s surprised Ed hasn’t let him know. Ed says he is giving up on farming but Oliver persuades him that he is a good farmer and offers him a loan. Finally he cheers him up and Ed appears to agree to keep going. He mustn’t make any hasty decisions or do anything silly.
  • Looking at the milk yields, they realise that their new method of feeing – TMR, is no more effective than the old method. Maybe they should change their minds rather than fussing with extra expensive bits of kit that is very labour intensive.
  • Ed sees Adam and apologises for the way Joe and Eddie behaved in the pub on Monday. Ed realises that he and Charlie are in the same boat and that Charlie has given him a lot of chances. Ed tells him that the call from Oliver has given a boost. After listening to Oliver, he feels he would be letting him down if he gave up. Adam says everyone has confidence in him.
  • Ruth is shocked to find out that Pip appears to be writing the whole of the Fairbrothers’ business plan for them. Pip is busy herself and it would be awful if Adam gives them the work on the basis of Pip’s business plan; it would be under false pretences. David thinks it will be fine, Adam’s met people like Toby before.
  • Phoebe is preparing for her PPE test. She’s taking it very seriously. Adam asks Brian what he thinks about the Fairbrothers and tells him about their plans. Brian is shocked that he would even consider talking to them. Adam takes the opportunity to ask Brian to chair the village meeting. He says he’ll be happy to. It will be an objective discussion of the facts, no special pleading. And they’ll get Alistair to speak from a vet’s perspective.
  • Ruth is acting the martyr by being determined to scrub the cooker and cook the supper and do the washing despite David’s offer to mop the floor and teach the boys to use the washing machine. He finally persuades her to give Usha a ring and to go out for the evening.
