Pip makes a last minute decision; Lilian bares her soul and makes an impassioned plea.

Radio Times: Pip is torn and Justin is stunned by the truth

Characters: Elizabeth, Justin, Lilian, Pip, Shula

• Pip is waiting in the clinic. She takes a call from Elizabeth who again offers to be with her. She says no and tells her aunt that she’s told her parents that she’s out for a drink with a university friend. Just then, she’s called by a nurse. She has her blood pressure taken along with a review of her medical history. She confirms that she wishes to proceed and confirms her signature on the consent. The nurse tells her that it’s not too late to have a second thought about the procedure.
• Elizabeth calls in at The Stables to lend Shula a luxurious coat for her Norway trip. It was a gift from Nigel. It’s fabulous, just the job. Elizabeth confides that she’s still troubled about the twin’s party at The Bull. Shula insists that she shouldn’t worry. Kenton’s bound to keep an eye on them.
• Pip tells her nurse that she wishes to continue and take both of the required drugs today. She’s told exactly what her first drug, Mefipristone will do and is given a detailed list of possible side effects. Because some women may develop a severe headache, the clinic would prefer that patients have someone with them for support. Pip says that there is no one. She would rather do this on her own.
• Lilian calls on Justin, ostensibly to check on Ruby, but with the real intention of explaining her situation to him. She discovers that the police are taking no further action with him regarding Matt’s accident. She goes through the whole sad litany of events including Matt’s attempt to scupper the Bridge Farm deal, for which she made him apologise. She was grateful when Matt agreed to the sale of the house. Yes….she was drawn to him but no…it wasn’t physical, just emotional. She didn’t want to run off with him, she had said “no” most firmly. Her feelings for him were a drop in the ocean compared to her love for Justin. How could she have trusted him? She had been scammed and…well, used.
• At Lower Loxley, Elizabeth finds Pip, pale and shaking. She feels that her niece should have stayed longer at the clinic. However, she assures her that she knows how she feels and that everything will be all right. Meanwhile, Pip is trying to say something. Eventually, she manages to tell Elizabeth that despite everything, she couldn’t take the medication, she just couldn’t. She’s still pregnant.
• Lilian explains that she wanted Justin to know everything. He didn’t know what to say. He could never trust her again. She had shown him true happiness but had snatched it away. “You’re my Achilles heel, and Matt is yours” he replies. Lilian admits to making a catastrophic mistake and has ruined the best thing that she had ever had. She wants so much to put things right; “just give me one more chance” she begs.
