Radio Times: It is a time for farewells. And Rob is helping Helen to move on.

  • Jenny tempts Ruth and Shula to nibbles as they await Charlie’s arrival. The talk is of change; the closure of Berrow Farm, the change of direction at Brookfield and the disposal of Ron and Vera Medlar’s farm. Ruth hopes that Rob’s presence later doesn’t sour the occasion. She thought that his article in the local paper was rather mean. With that, the phone rings. Guess who?
  • Rob explains to Jenny that Helen isn’t up to partying and sends their apologies. After he hangs up, Helen admits to feeling tired. Rob feels that it might be for the best following his article in The Echo. Helen can’t see why he should be worried about giving his opinion. She mentions the ideas that she has discussed with Fallon about cross promotions. Rob is, as usual, completely underwhelmed.
  • Shula, Ruth and Charlie discuss his forthcoming Scottish challenge although he feels that he is leaving under a cloud, especially after Rob’s literary intervention. Ruth feels that few will see his time in Ambridge as a failure. Adam appears, without Ian, saying that Charlie should have a right to reply to Rob’s article. Charlie feels that now is not the right time; perhaps later!
  • Helen refuses Rob’s offer of a hot chocolate, suggesting instead a camomile tea. It becomes clear that she didn’t finish her supper; perhaps her lunch with Fallon was too much. She wonders if Rob feels as Kirsty does, that she looks unwell. He thinks she looks … wonderful! She decides to take a bath.
  • Rob asks what exactly Kirsty said to Helen. When she tells him, he explodes, calling her a “bitch”, a woman with her own agenda who was left “bitter and twisted” after the affair with Tom. As she’s now picked up with a dysfunctional Roy Tucker, he reckons that Helen should accept that she’s no true friend. She would be much better off without her in her life.
  • Left alone with Adam after guests have left, Charlie admits he feels a failure but wishes Adam and Ian well. Adam begs him not to punish him further for the decision he made. Charlie has a parting gift for Adam. They embrace and kiss. Adam finally admits that he loves Charlie. He doesn’t want him to go but he is an emotional coward. Charlie makes to leave, but Adam pulls him back and returns his embrace, in full measure.
