Rob is thrilled with Helen’s news and Ruth is not adjusting to Heather’s death.
Radio Times: There’s news for Rob, and opportunity for Fallon?
Characters: David, Fallon, Helen, Henry, Jill, Rob, Ruth- Ruth finds Heather’s written wishes for her funeral; she has requested Pip give a reading. David tries to convince Ruth that this takes the responsibility from her shoulders. Jill calls and tells David that she has cooked a chicken with veg. She wants to bring it over.
- Rob is talking to Helen through the bathroom door where she seems indisposed. Fallon rings the bell and asks to talk to Helen about her ideas for the café. Rob is surprised and incredulous she has been offered the job.
- Jill talks to David about postponing the celebration for her 85th. She wants to wait until after the funeral in part because she is concerned about making trouble. David reassures Jill that Brookfield is still her home and he is sure that Ruth wants her back as well. It is best to wait a bit, they both agree. Ruth comes in and Jill hugs her and takes a hasty leaving. Ruth breaks down and runs out of the room.
- Helen asks Fallon to come back another time with her ideas. Helen apologises to Rob for not telling him about Fallon’s hire. Helen blames Tom for the decision and Rob criticizes her cruelly. Helen says she has a reason for her absent-mindedness: she is pregnant. Rob changes his tone immediately.
- Ruth admits that it is hard to see Jill in the kitchen instead of Heather. Ruth blames herself and the rest of the family. David is the one who changed his mind about the move. The worry and stress of where Heather would live was too much for her. Ruth feels that if they had moved when they planned, all would have been different.
- Rob is busy putting cushions around Helen. He is thrilled with the news although Helen doesn’t seem so sure. Against Helen’s instincts, Rob tells Henry that there is a secret and there will be a baby. Both Rob and Henry seem to assume that the baby will be a boy although Helen cautions that it may be a girl. Oh no, says Rob, Henry will have a baby brother.
