Roy and Helen support Kirsty through the worst news and Jennifer is determined to impress Miranda with an Ambridge party.

Radio Times: Roy and Helen have a nervous wait, and Jennifer raises her game.

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Kirsty is feeling ill in the morning and thinks she may have a fever. Roy is fussing around, cooking for her and trying to find ways to help Kirsty feel better. Kirsty suddenly feels dizzy and then the sharp pains begin. Kirsty runs for the toilet. Roy is alarmed and speaks through the door. Kirsty tells him that she is bleeding. Roy insists on taking Kirsty immediately to the hospital and she agrees.
  • Miranda is annoyed because the village shop is closed and she can’t buy a newspaper. Jennifer tries to help and invites Justin and Miranda to a party to celebrate the land purchase. Miranda is in high dudgeon and denigrates Jennifer’s efforts. She grudgingly accepts, though, and departs with a final comment about throwing a party in Ambridge: ‘rather you than me’. Lovely manners.
  • Miranda comes upon Brian and Jennifer eating lunch. Justin is parking the car but Miranda takes the opportunity to denigrate all restaurants around Ambridge as being unable to produce a good Valentine’s Day meal. Jennifer talks up her party again as bound to be exciting. ‘All the BL Board will be there!’ Jennifer assures Miranda that she will enjoy herself. Brian twigs that Jennifer wants to impress Miranda and has transformed a family dinner party into an extravaganza. Jennifer denies this but does confide her worries about Lilian’s behaviour with Justin, especially with Miranda there.
  • Roy and Helen are waiting for Kirsty to see the midwife. Helen has texted Tom but he is coming down from Scotland. Helen goes into the room where Kirsty is but the midwife has gone to get the doctor. Kirsty doesn’t understand what can have gone wrong since the scan. The obstetric consultant comes in for the examination and Kirsty confirms that she has been having sharp pains about every 20 minutes.
  • Despite her claims to Miranda that the caterers are already engaged, Jennifer desperately searches for a suitable firm to cater the party. Brian is horrified at the price but Jenny argues they must splash out. Besides, she wants to show Miranda that an Ambridge party is the equal of any Notting Hill do. Brian convinces Jennifer that she throws the best parties; why not show Miranda how things are done in Ambridge? Jennifer is flattered and comes round to Brian’s point of view. She will contact Fallon and use only local firms.
  • The consultant tells Kirsty that the news is bad. She had an infection and will be delivering the baby soon. The baby is not going to make it; Kirsty is having a late miscarriage. At first, Kirsty protests but the consultant is sympathetic but firm. Helen cries and Kirsty is stoic.
