Shula continues to play the martyr. Freddie continues to play the hardworking student. Adam plays go-between
Radio Times: Adam has a brainwave. Shula is left reeling
Characters: Adam, Alan, Freddie, Jennifer, Johnny, Shula- Adam asks Freddie about doing some fruit picking, but Freddie claims that exams and revision must come first. He’s seen lots of ads for pickers around the college. Everyone seems short of labour. Freddie makes a quick exit when he gets a text message – he must ‘pick some stuff up from a mate.’
- Alan finds Shula frantically cleaning more old grave stones, and begs her to take a break. She finally agrees, and it’s clear that she is full of anger at Alistair’s revelation. Her anger appears to come less from his infidelity and more from the fact that Lavinia Rafferty is a Hunt member. Shula will be the laughing-stock of the district. Shula admits she said something awful to Alistair when he told her, but it’s increasingly clear that Shula can see the situation only from her perspective, which is that of the wronged party. She claims that she sits home alone while Alistair has a dalliance, conveniently forgetting who initiated the rift.
- Freddie bumps into Johnny, whose head is mending well. nervously, Freddie mentions that Harrison told him Johnny had told him that Ellis was a likely suspect. Has Harrison got back to him? To Freddie’s relief it appears that Harrison hasn’t. From the number of text messages Freddie is receiving, Johnny feels sure he has a new girlfriend – but then one arrives from the Deputy Principal of the college, summoning Freddie to a meeting tomorrow morning. What does he want? I’ve no idea, lies Freddie.
- Adam wonders if local labour might be the answer. Jennifer agrees; her piece on the village website attracted interest; even Auntie Chris offered! Adam is less sure, but thinks inviting locals and especially local youth to the BBQ might be a good idea. Jennifer is all for it and will take care of the catering. But then, keeping his word to Brian, Adam tackles the subject of the Aldridge marriage rift as he and Jennifer prepare the caravans. Realising that this is a ploy by Brian to regain his position in her good books, Jennifer rounds on Adam. If Adam’s ‘pal’ thinks he can impress her with a bit of DIY he can think again. he has betrayed her trust, he chose to leave the marital bedroom… so he can just put up with it.
