  • There’s trouble in the dairy: several cows have mastitis – probably due to flies – so they will need to be dosed with insecticide and the milk thrown away. David reports seeing Rob and Henry playing cricket; it looked very serious – not much fun at all. Fallon calls in search a vital bit of kit for dunk the vicar; David tells her it’s Alistair she needs to talk to.
  • Out for a ride with Shula, Caroline reports that they have told Grundys about the offer for Grange Farm. Joe was very quiet. Alistair’s move of his practice from Penny Hassett will now take to the end of week; he has been called out again. Caroline is very direct: something is bothering Shula. What is it?
  • Shula apologises for being less than cheerful; she has been dwelling on the incident between Rob and the hunt saboteur: if only she had acted differently; she lied to the police. She had expected Rob to be mortified when he had calmed down but nothing could have been further from the reality. She did it to protect Helen; that looks very silly now. Does Fallon overhear this conversation when she calls at The Stables to see Alistair? She says not.
  • Tom has a troublesome pig but it’s not a match for Tom and Adam, who has dropped by to ask if Tom has thought more about applying for a Nuffield scholarship. Tom has thought about it but can’t justify leaving the farm. The interviews are in October. Adam explains about Justin’s willingness to sponsor. Maybe Tom will take another look. When would be the right time to mention it to mum and dad?
