The pigs leave Brookfield and Clarrie almost catches Sid and Jolene

Radio Times: Betty can’t believe it

Characters: , , , , , , ,
  • Clarrie’s in the shop, as normal just happy to be out of the flat. They’ve been visited by their new parish priest (courtesy of information from Janet) but Joe’s still listless. William’s her single ray of sunshine, a good home and career prospects. She and Betty tango a little around the subject of Sid and Jolene, plenty of diplomatic niceties until they are both sure that each other knows what they’re trying to talk about. They’re fairly sure that Fallon was lying, and Betty remembers back to when Kathy was away with Jamie in London … and then Jolene walks in, at which point talk of William’s driving lessons fills the air. Jolene, strangely for one who used to spend so much time at the gym, is there to buy cigarettes.
  • It’s not a happy day at Brookfield. David and Ruth are herding the pigs onto the lorry. Eventually Phil turns up – torn between not being able to see them leave and not being able to not see them leave. He’s been a pig-farmer all his working life, ever since starting them to make money from pedigree breeding when wooing Grace. They squeal their way into the lorry …. and then they’re gone …
  • Later Phil’s chatting with Brian, and Pat (who puts her foot in it a little, not knowing about the pigs). Phil’s complaining about the cost of providing the welfare that the public demands of them, but then goes and buys from countries without such strict practices. While the organic premium is helping Pat, the strong pound is killing the rest of them …
  • Jolene’s early for her line-dancing at The Bull, so Sid offers her some tea. Clarrie’s early for her shift and wanders in on them – did she see? She shouted an early warning “hello” but who knows? Sid claimed to be happy because of the news of the cat going on sale without its licence, and Jolene’s sure that their secret’s safe … but …
