Radio Times: It is the end of an era in Ambridge, but things may be looking up for Ed.

  • Susan is making an early start in the kitchen and Ed pauses to help but, not knowing where anything goes, is soon sent off to his cows. He heads to Brookfield after milking his own cows but is not really prepared for what he finds there – Ruth is practising her witch’s lines for the show. The subject of accounting software comes up; they will talk later.
  • When they do, Ed is impressed with the software; he can see how helpful it would be, once the hurdle of putting all the data into the computer is crossed. Ruth offers to help him get started – he’s a bit scared of computers – one day next week.
  • Jim thinks Friday’s show will be dreary. Kenton suggests that he is prejudging it and Lynda will pull something out of the bag. He has to admit she was right about Borsetshire Life but now that Alice has suggested Christopher as a subject he is having second thoughts about his decision to resign. The mood is changed by Jill’s arrival with the news that Bob Pullen has died; he was Ambridge’s oldest resident, an honour which now passes to Joe.
  • When Ed returns home he finds Susan slaving over a hot sewing machine. She apologises for being a bit sharp earlier and assures him that he and Emma are welcome. She knows she gets a bit stressed about the children but they are not being naughty, just being children. She can see that Ed is determined to get back on his feet and that he loves Emma and the children. New Year – new start.
