There’s a collective sigh of relief when the Grundy rival scarecrows tie for first place.

Radio Times: It is the day of the village fete, and who will emerge the victor in the scarecrow wars?

Characters: , , , , , , ,
  • There’s no sign of Clarrie at the fête – still in the dumps after Pat’s onslaught on Friday. George is keen to take his mum and Chris to see the rival troll/goat creation even though the opening ceremony is about to start. Chris can bear to miss Carinthia Hart; Susan wouldn’t. Susan has no hesitation in recommending ‘Mistress of the Paddocks’ to Nic – and telling her why.
  • Chris is looking forward to Alice’s graduation, though he is not thrilled at the prospect of spending the day with Brian and Jennifer. Having seen the Casa Nueva scarecrows, he and Emma understand Will’s secret weapon: Eddie has built a ‘river’ water feature under the bridge – which is not as good as Chris’s but Emma fears being pipped at the post by the water. All will be revealed at 5pm.
  • Vicky is not backward in coming forward about quizzing Tom. How did E. coli get into the dairy? Pat is such a stickler for hygiene. Tom pleads ‘investigation still in progress’.
  • Mia is enjoying dunking the vicar – getting her own back for him wetting Keira. Chris reports that the water feature has properly put Emma’s nose out of joint; this is welcome news to Will, who now wants to know Ed’s reaction but Nic is not impressed about the competitiveness.
  • What Vicky couldn’t get from Tom about the E. coli she endeavours to get from Susan but is thwarted by Lewis mounting the stage to announce the winners of the scarecrow competition. Vicky is highly commended for her Three Bears and the first prize is shared between the rival Billy Goat Gruffs; Will is uncommonly gracious about the joint success.
