In retaliation, Toby taunts Rex with his lack of female companionship. Pip is late and Toby anxiously decides to give her a call.
- Alice meets Adam in the field as he finishes with the herbal lays. She and Adam discuss Brian running over Peggy’s cat. In jest, Adam suggests that Alice volunteer for the speed watch and she returns the needling by asking if Adam plans to volunteer as well. Laughing, Alice invites Adam for a pint in The Bull.

He suggests they talk them over after eating but Pip is in a contrary mood. She isn’t hungry since she had one of Jill’s flapjacks which working late with David.
- Over pints, Alice and Adam discuss technology as part of the future of farming. She and Adam agree that tradition and technology need to work together. Alice admits shiny new machines don’t always help and Adam admits that traditional methods could use a boost. Adam asks for specifics on technological assistance from Alice. They have a true discussion on farming methods based on the expertise of each sibling.
- Apparently, Toby has failed in the romantic department because he is fearful of Bert returning. Toby complains that he hates having to think about what Bert is doing at every moment but Pip points out it is Bert’s cottage. Maybe they should go out next time, Toby suggests, but Pip reminds him that they have no money. It turns out that Toby had plans to move to Felpersham but Pip declares that is out of the question. Toby asks to move back to Rickyard but again Pip tells him the farm needs the rental. Pip leaves with their relationship unsettled and uneasy, in part due to Pip’s focus on her family and the farm at Toby’s expense. As Pip is walking out the door, Toby shouts at her not to forget their date at The Bull on Friday. Not being the centre of female attention is clearly a new experience for Toby and he is not handling it well.
