Toby is impressed by Pip. Caroline is impressed by Ed.

Radio Times: Pip meets up with some new arrivals, and Caroline is feeling low.

  • Adam, David and Pip discuss the shearing and the landowners’ dinner. Adam tells Pip about his herbal ley and the hoggets he is considering buying in, but her attention is diverted by the arrival of the brothers Fairbrother, who have come to see David. Pip welcomes them and makes sure they know that, far from being her boyfriend, Adam is gay.
  • Oliver worries that Caroline is overworking as Grey Gables prepares to host the landowners’ dinner. He wants her to come home for a rest, but the flood damage and the loss of so many items makes Caroline upset. Ed calls to see Joe, and Caroline asks him what he would like as a wedding present. Ed says everyone has been so kind there is nothing they need. Afterwards Caroline, impressed by Ed’s lack of materialism, has an idea; she saw Clarrie looking at the donated clothing rail for a wedding outfit; she will ask Susan what Clarrie’s size is, and maybe she and Oliver could buy her an outfit. Oliver is alarmed that he might be dragged in to choosing this, or worse, but is reassured by his wife.
  • Rex and Toby tell David all about their Rugger histories and their search for land to rent. David agrees to keep a look out. As they leave, there is banter between Toby and Pip. Suddenly Pip announces a change of plan for tomorrow; she will stay at Brookfield and help with the shearing. How strange – Toby will be there rolling fleeces.
  • At the dinner, to which David takes Pip, Adam and David discuss the herbal ley. It seems that Brian is none too impressed. When Pip goes to buy drinks, David observes her in a confrontation with the father of a fellow student; he has made homophobic remarks, and Pip stands up to him. That, says her father pompously, is what politics is all about. Pip should go and vote.
