Characters: , , ,
  • Brenda phones Tom to demand she sees him at lunchtime. When he turns up he is still moaning about the farm and his work being interrupted. She tells him their relationship isn’t working. She wanted it too but it just isn’t. They can’t go on like this. They have to split up. Tom is shocked and just starts shouting. They have their whole history mapped out. Brenda says that’s the problem. He doesn’t listen to her. She knows in her heart that their relationship isn’t working and she has to listen to her heart. Tom is desperate not to let her go, suggests they have some space, they’ve chosen a place to build a house, to have children. Brenda says that’s one of the things. She doesn’t want children and she knows he is desperate for them. She can’t deny him that. It’s breaking her heart to tell him but she has to tell him the truth.
  • Pat and Tony are having a look over the cows and Tony says they are going to have to make a decision. Tony says he thinks Tom is right. His case is just too good. Pat says it’s not just sentiment, she believes it is important. But Tony says they can still ensure the milk is still well sourced. They must allow their children to move forward how they want. Pat is the only one against now.
  • Tony continues to try to persuade Pat to change her mind. She says she can’t shake off her thought that money is the only factor in Tom’s thinking. Tony reminds her that Helen has a place in this too. Pat says it will cost them to lose the herd. Tony says it will cost them to keep going too. They need to relax. Pat says she isn’t ready to retire and Tony agrees but just a little. And Tony thinks they need to be there to support Tom in the changes.
  • After lunch, Pat and Tony tell Tom they agree to sell off the herd. Tom seems very underwhelmed. He tries to say everything is fine but he clearly isn’t interested. Tony tries to tell him he’s got everything he wanted. It obviously doesn’t feel like that to him and after they’ve gone he simply sobs.
