Vicky impresses the midwife. Tom impresses a catering company. Will Jim impress Borchester Life?
Radio Times: Lynda proves to be very persuasive and Tom confides in his mum.
Characters: Brenda, Jim, Lynda, Pat, Tom, Tony, Vicky- Jim attempts to pick Lynda’s brains about writing for Borchester Life, which is clearly something of a sore subject with her. Lynda is more concerned with her Christmas production. She is calling a meeting to discuss the staging of Much Ado about Nothing, which offers Jim an opportunity to flaunt his acquaintance of Shakespeare’s History plays.
- Pat thinks Tom is unusually quiet as he helps Tony lift carrots. Later, Tom tells her that he had no orders from the food fair, but that is not what is on his mind; he feels that Brenda is not as committed to their relationship as he is. Pat suggests they just leave it to take its course.
- Brenda gives Vicky an electric blue maternity top as she picks her up for her midwife appointment. Vicky is nervous, but feels well prepared, having done much research. The midwife is duly impressed.
- Lynda’s meeting votes for Much Ado, and she has her eye on Kenton for the lead. Jim is not keen to take part until Lynda suggests the part of Dogberry; it requires a dry and ironic wit. Jim is duly flattered, and takes up Lynda’s suggestion of sending a trial piece in to Borchester Life.
- Brenda has some good news for Tom. Speakmans, who supply holiday cottages, have placed a huge order for meat balls and sausage casserole as well as sausage and bacon. Tom and Brenda go out to celebrate with champagne and a meal.
