While some disputes are settled, some are not and others just got a whole lot worse.

Radio Times: Pip cannot apologise enough, and Lily takes charge.

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Elizabeth and Lily are preparing for tonight’s party. Elizabeth is worried that David may find himself drawn into an IBR argument with Tom and Brian. Perhaps Lily was right. They should have invited more guests in order to dilute the possible effect. Elizabeth is mortified to hear that Lily has indeed invited many of her Facebook friends to swell the numbers, irrespective of whether they really are true, current friends. She tries to object but Lily disappears to take a call from Toby.
  • With the party in full swing, Elizabeth greets Kenton and it takes but a few moments for their recent arguments to be laid aside. Kenton is relieved to spot the Brookfield Archers arriving in force but Elizabeth sees a face from the past with Christine. Elsewhere, Pip gets her mother a drink only to be told that Pat and Tony are avoiding them and the Aldridges are being frostily polite. Meanwhile, Lily manages to persuade David to start her driving practice sessions again. She rushes off to tell Freddie. Kenton and David share the news that their driving duties have been reinstated when Kenton spots Terry Barford and David heads off to speak to Tom.
  • Tom wants nothing to do with David, even when he thanks him for taking his blog down. Apparently Tony asked him; had it been up to Tom, it would still be there. Tom flounces off telling David not to spoil the party more than he already has. He shouldn’t have come. As Ruth approaches, David confides that he shouldn’t have tried to talk to Tom. Kenton is the next recipient of Tom’s misery. He’s annoyed that his father’s breeding plans for his Angus “hobby herd” have been destroyed by David’s lack of a compensation offer. For Tony to replace the reactors will be prohibitively expensive. Tom leaves as Elizabeth hoves into view. She spots Tim Beauchamp and she clearly wants to avoid him.
  • Pip manages to get Ruth to agree to meet her on the terrace in ten minutes in order that they can try and put things straight. It promises to be a rocky ride for both of them. Ruth seems to be in no mood to pull her punches. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, Lily, David and Kenton are having a good laugh about the number of ex-boyfriends of her mothers Lily has invited. Apparently, Tim Beauchamp almost gave Elizabeth the full story of his divorce and Terry Barford has chanced his arm, chatting her up.
  • On the terrace, Ruth asks Pip if she really wants to talk. The menace in her voice is palpable. Pip insists that she does. Ruth says that she’s been deeply hurt by Pip. She feels that she’s made a fool of her. For years, Ruth has been her daughter’s confidante and her champion. She’s kept secrets and has fought Pip’s corner whenever possible, especially when it comes to Toby. Because of Pip’s actions, she’s hurt Helen and Clarry but worse than that she’s concerned about the rift which has developed between her and Pip. She doesn’t know what they are any more or even if they have a relationship. Pip didn’t trust her and lied to her deliberately for weeks. Pip could have called a halt to things, but she chose not to. Ruth admits to being ashamed of her own daughter. Pip begs her not to say so. But Ruth insists, it’s killing her, it breaks her heart… but she is thoroughly ashamed.
