  • The Victorian paper mill at Gilbert’s Cross is the destination for Matt and Lilian; they find it full of character. Matt has a really good feeling about it; Lilian likes it too but is minded to tread carefully and needs time to think. She particularly likes the stunning views.
  • Lynda and David bump into one another and their frosty conversation about badgers indicates no common ground.
  • There’s bad news for Tom: Trevor is only prepared to do the milking one morning a week and Tony will do the afternoons at weekend. He reports this to Brenda but promises not to mention it when they go to the Thai restaurant in Borchester for a belated birthday treat this evening. Their conversation is interrupted by a visit from Rob, just to introduce himself. He would be interested to learn about Ambridge Organics Tom is only too pleased to share his plans. Rob appreciates the difficulties of a family farm but he escaped to USA and Canada; his elder brother runs the farm now.
  • On his way the village shop, Rob is ambushed by Lynda. She wants to know where he stands on the subject of a badger cull. Although the new dairy is not affected, he appreciates the threat that badger-borne TB poses to other farmers, so he feels a cull would be a good idea – not the response Lynda wanted.
  • Back home, after a relaxing bath, Lilian is about to be treated to a Matt special supper, but first the phone rings: a desperate Paul wants to meet up, just to talk, when he visits the area again next week.
