Poachers seem to be leaving evidence everywhere around the village. Jill and Elizabeth discuss the implications of Heather’s death.

Radio Times: Kate is raring to go, and Lynda makes a discovery.

Characters: Brian, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Jill, Lynda

• Lynda has discovered a mauled dead deer and called Brian. He thinks the roe deer has been hunted down by dogs. Brian mentions that Will has been worried about poachers and he notes further that these gangs are well-armed as well as dangerous.
• Elizabeth is pondering the issue of Fairbrothers’ geese. Jill has called round to give her condolences to Ruth. Plans haven’t been firmed up but Jill notes that attendance at the services will have to involve an overnight trip. Elizabeth probably can’t make it but Jill will be there on her behalf. Lynda interrupts just as Elizabeth was bringing up the issue of the change Heather’s death makes in Jill’s residence.
• Jennifer tries to serve some of Carol’s elderflower cordial to Brian but he will have none of it. Apparently, Jenny no longer suspects Carol of anything sinister, especially as regards to John’s death. Kate returns just in time for her birthday.
• Lynda wishes to discuss the location of the Christmas pageant in Ambridge but the village hall won’t be ready in time. She has come to Elizabeth to ask if they could have the show at Lower Loxley. Elizabeth points out that the run up to Christmas is a very busy time but Lynda brings up the positive public relations aspect. Elizabeth promises to give it some thought and to check the calendar.
• Kate is uncomfortable with any good cheer around her birthday; it’s only a number, after all, she mutters. She discusses her business plans and hopes to offer detox residence programmes in the New Year. She leaves suddenly because someone named Jake wants her to come. Jennifer’s birthday dinner is left in the oven. Brian thinks that Kate is sensitive because she is 38; she can’t even claim to be in her mid-30s any longer.
• Elizabeth reluctantly agrees to Lynda’s proposal. Jill enters and Elizabeth asks if Jill plans to move back to Brookfield. They both agree to wait upon any decisions until things settle down a bit. Jill further feels that the less time she spends at Brookfield for now, the better.
