A verdict is reached, but for David, the torment goes on.
Radio Times: It is the day of the inquest and David gives his evidence.
Characters: David, Elizabeth, Hayley, Phoebe, Shula, Vicky- Elizabeth is calm as she prepares for the inquest, but is glad of Shula’s support, knowing that she had to go through a similar inquest after Mark died. Shula remembers how Nigel came with her.
- At Underwoods, Hayley and Vicky take Phoebe shopping for her trip to South Africa. Phoebe is worried about it, not least about the money Hayley is spending on her.
- The Coroner opens the inquest, and a nervous David gives evidence. He describes in detail how he and Nigel climbed on the roof, and Nigel lost his balance. He becomes distressed as he recalls each detail, but the Coroner is understanding, and finally a verdict of Accidental Death is reached.
- Vicky treats Hayley and Phoebe to a snack in Underwoods Cafe, and while Hayley goes to buy it, she gently asks Phoebe what is bothering her. Poor Phoebe is longing to see Nolly, Sipho and Lucas, but is agonising over leaving Roy, Hayley and Abbie behind. Vicky comes up with a suggestion; they will find a way of buying a present for Roy and Hayley while Hayley is elsewhere. Vicky will hide it until Easter, then give it to them as a surprise present from Phoebe, to show how much she loves them. All Phoebe’s worries disappear, and she thanks Grandma Vicky with enormous relief.
- After the Inquest, Elizabeth wants to go home. David continues to torture himself, however, and when he phones Ruth, he refuses to talk about it. Firmly she tells him the verdict has to mark the end of it all. The case is now closed and a line drawn under it. But David fails to see it that way.
