Radio Times: James and Leonie make some enemies. Meanwhile, there are vandals at work in Ambridge.

  • Bert goes outside on the second day of the Open Gardens to discover that badgers have dug up his lawn. The damage is bad enough, but there are worse visitors to come in the shape of James and Leonie, giggling and sneering their way round Ambridge’s gardens.
  • A more welcome visitor to Bert’s garden is Matt, who helps him rake the lawn, though both of them realise the damage is more than cosmetic. Matt’s aim is less philanthropy and more avoiding Lilian’s ghastly step-son and his even ghastlier partner.
  • Jim is the next recipient of a visit from James and Leonie, and makes his antagonistic feelings very clear. For a start, they should pay him a fee to photograph his garden.
  • Peggy tries again to persuade Elona to accept her offer of help in renting 3 The Green, but Elona insists that she will not be able to do so. Finally she tells Peggy the real reason; her husband has been in prison for receiving stolen goods. He is now in a hostel in Birmingham, but will rejoin Elona and the girls. She thinks they will have to try to make a new start somewhere far away. Peggy is shocked. When she tells Lilian and Matt, Matt suggests that it is never wise to mix business and one’s personal life.
  • As the ghastly pair prepare to head back to London, Lynda is unusually reticent about future village events. When Jim says he hopes there will be no recurrence of James and Leonie’s visit, Lynda is unable to guarantee that. She fears they will be seeing a lot more of them.
