  • One of the Brookfield cows is having a difficult calving; Ruth hopes to avoid calling Alistair. Emma understands that in the light of Ed’s recent experience. She called to tell Ruth that Keith is in court this afternoon; Emma is not going and, to be frank, is not bothered what happens to him.
  • Kathy wants to talk to Jamie about his future. Jamie is more concerned about charging his phone. He agrees to talk but not now. Kathy assumes he has a date with Natalie; he puts her right about that but doesn’t tell her why.
  • Tracy is going to support Keith but Susan won’t. She is treated to a lecture on family loyalty. Tracy reckons she has made a big sacrifice to support Keith: she asked Ifty out and he made excuses; it must be because her brother is a crook. When Emma turns up Tracy has nothing to say to her and leaves making enough fuss to start Keira crying. Emma confides in her mother about her money troubles.
  • When Emma drops in again on Ruth she finds that, without calling the vet, they have delivered a lovely strong heifer calf. She reports that Keith has been committed for trial at the Crown Court. Ruth expresses her gratitude for what Emma did; she realises what it has cost her in family terms.
  • After the earlier conversation, Susan has decided that Emma needs cheering up. She has brought some pies and on Saturday they will go into town and buy the new shoes for Keira that Emma can’t afford.
  • Rosa drops by to see Jamie but has missed him again. She asks Kathy if he is ok. It was a silly misunderstanding. What was? The break up with Natalie. Kathy thought it was about A levels, though it is clear to her that Jamie has not been truthful with Rosa about his grades. Rosa thinks A levels are not the most important things in life. Friends are important too.
