  • Jennifer calls on Alice and nags her about the state of her house and the empty fridge. Alice is going to spend the day in Felpersham, and does her best to resist her mother’s interference, but finally has to accept her offer to bring a meal round. Asked whether she and Chris have managed to talk about the job offer, and unwilling to give her mother a straight answer, Alice is rescued by the arrival of Susan.
  • On the phone to Paul, Lilian is surprised by the arrival in the office of Brenda, who claims that she has to work today because Matt wants the website updated. Lilian comments on Brenda’s haggard appearance, and appears genuinely concerned to hear about Bethany’s problems.
  • Alice admires Amy’s new flat. Amy remarks that is good to be away from home, which leads Alice to tell her why she is so keen to go to Canada; the only problem will be getting Chris to share her point of view. Amy tells her they must discuss it as a matter of urgency. Alice wants Chris to mention it first.
  • Lilian calls on Jennifer, who has been to the Walk of Witness and intends going to the dawn service on Easter Day. James is celebrating his fortieth birthday in Marrakesh with Leonie, and Lilian has sent him a case of vintage wine. Jennifer comments on Lilian’s glow; Matt must be looking after her. But it isn’t Matt’s voicemail that Lilian is ringing.
  • As she insisted, Jennifer brings a meal for Alice and Chris, then broaches the subject of Canada. She tells Alice she simply cannot go; it would be selfish, she needs her friends and family around her.
