Jill ends a blameless life by pleading guilty to criminal assault and Roy is appalled that Lexi is the victim of racist graffiti on her caravan.

Radio Times: Jill wants to be heard, and Roy is adamant action must be taken

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Roy is having a hard time getting Phoebe up and out of the house for work. Kirsty reminds him that she is still a teenager. Phoebe moans about having to get up to pick strawberries. Kirsty tells her that she is welcome to join in the protest about food waste.
  • Jill and Kirsty are leading the protest march at the former Happy Friends Café. They are moved away from the building by Harrison because they are blocking access to the building. One of the famous Duxford sisters is coming to give a speech extolling the virtues of the expensive restaurant, Les Soeurs Heureuses, which will be opened on the site of the former pop up, pay what you wish café. Jill and Kirsty are also passing out food from supermarkets. This food is past the sell- by date but still perfectly edible and the women want to demonstrate how much food is wasted every day.
  • David stops by Grey Gables to book a table. He wants to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ruth’s first day of work at Brookfield. The actual anniversary is Thursday but that is Caroline’s memorial so David wishes to make the dinner on Friday. They both express doubts about the suitability of Grange Farm for the memorial; they don’t believe the Grundys will have it cleaned up in time.
  • The protestors disrupt the speech by one of the new chefs. They push forward and chant loudly. The woman gets into a shouting match with Jill and Kirsty. Jill throws a flapjack and hits the famous restauranteur in the eye. She is elated and continues to throw flapjack missiles. Harrison arrests Jill for assault when she refuses to cease and desist.
  • Roy brings Phoebe’s phone to her since she forgot it at home. He asks if Lexi is around. Phoebe confides that she saw Lexi trying to scrub off racist graffiti from one of the caravans. Lexi doesn’t want it reported but Roy is very angry. If this kind of racism isn’t reported and stopped, it will escalate. Phoebe protests that she promised Lexi she wouldn’t report it to Adam. If Phoebe won’t, then Roy will.
  • Jill has admitted guilt but Harrison is giving her a caution. This involves finger prints and DNA. Jill doesn’t want to give the biological identifications but Harrison is adamant that this is what a caution for a criminal offence involves. Jill is only given this option because she hasn’t committed a previous offence and is unlikely to offend again. Jill seems subdued when she is faced with the legal consequences of her offence. David accosts Kirsty and demands to know what is happening. He is incredulous that Jill has been charged with common assault. Lulu Duxford, the victim, insisted on someone calling an ambulance and exaggerating the flapjack incident. David asks his mother why she was throwing flapjacks when the protest was against food waste. Jill laughs and admits that was an unfortunate projectile but it was the only thing close to hand. David sighs and notes that Jill is 86 and after a blameless life, she now has a criminal record!
