Jill shows signs of becoming an eco-warrior; Lilian shows signs of making a complete fool of herself.
Radio Times: Matt is on the prowl and Jill calls on experience
Characters: David, Henry, Jill, Kenton, Kirsty, Lilian, Matt, Ruth- At Brookfield, David and Ruth ponder the fact that for one night at least, they are childless, their brood being occupied with their own social lives. David finds a note from his mother saying that she’s helping Kirsty with the wildlife stall and won’t be back ’till late. David suggests taking Kenton up on his offer of a free meal, in part payment of his outstanding loan. Ruth agrees.
- At the wildlife stall, Jill introduces Henry to some facts about bees and pollination. Kirsty needs to get him home. Jill’s quite happy about minding the shop until closing time. At The Stables, Lilian prepares to ride Amir when Matt turns up. He’s come to see Anisha. Not wishing to chat, Lilian trots off leaving him to his own devices. At The Bull, Kenton finds David and Ruth a table. It’s only available for an hour and a half. As he goes to find two glasses of Scruff Gin, David plans on having three full courses, given Kenton’s £20,000 indebtedness. He’s sure his brother will cope.
- Kirsty returns to find Jill holding forth on bee-friendly planting. She’s amused to find Jill so engaged. Jill in her turn hasn’t enjoyed herself so much in years. Lilian runs into Matt again while out riding. She accuses him of setting Tom up to fail and let’s rip with a tirade of invective. When finished, she tells Matt to get out of the way and rides off at speed. Seconds later he hears a cry. Lilian has fallen and her horse has bolted. She’s clearly very groggy and he insists that she stays put until he gives her the go ahead. She agrees.
- David and Ruth are enjoying their meal while discussing how things were going in their lives. Despite the need to keep a sharp eye on their finances, David’s glad that they have each other. Kenton arrives just in time for David to order another free bottle of wine. He’s not at all amused and wishes that David would stop raising the subject of the loan. He eventually agrees to the free bottle providing that they vacate their table as agreed.
- Matt is concerned about Lilian, she is more concerned about her horse. With Justin in London, Matt insists that she should put herself in his hands. Everything is going to be alright. At Brookfield, Ruth tells Jill what a wonderful night they have had. Jill explains that she has had a good afternoon on the wildlife stall. In truth, she feels that she could do it all over again.
- Matt manages to rescue Amir and bring him over to Lilian. She raises the fact that they hadn’t really spoken since he returned. He admits that he wasn’t proud of the earlier time in his life when he did a bunk with her cash. She wasn’t proud of the tricks that she had played on him either. She thought that they had both betrayed each other. He agreed but nevertheless thought that they were good for each other. Lilian suddenly becomes very angry, believing that this whole scene was of his making, and she almost fell for it. “Leave me alone Matt” she shouts, “Leave me alone.”
