Kenton, Nigel and (star witness) Pat give evidence.
Radio Times: Pat and Kenton take up arms.
Characters: Defence Counsel, Kenton, Nigel, Pat, Prosecution Counsel- It’s Kenton’s turn to enter the witness box and recount how he perceived Kathy’s non-communication from the other side of the world. When he returned she was cold, weepy and depressed; she was not anxious to resume normal sexual relations. When in March she had told him what had happened, he understood these symptoms. Slowly their relationship improved; she turned back into his Kathy.
- The defence lawyer seizes upon Kenton’s reaction to being told; wasn’t it evidence that Kathy had a perfect cover story? Why didn’t she tell it immediately? Kenton insists that Kathy had not lied to him; it took her that long to be ready to tell him the truth.
- Pat is next, telling of Kathy’s distress and how she had rejected Pat’s advice to go for counselling, because she didn’t want to go over it. Why didn’t Pat advise her to go to the police? She did initially but when she saw how much the idea distressed her, she changed her mind. The defence questioning leads her to add that, in view of how few rape cases lead to convictions, she could not ask her to go through the ordeal for nothing. Counsel asks whether Pat considered herself a feminist but Pat is not going to be sneered at and gives as good as she gets. Afterwards Kenton tells her she was fantastic.
- Nigel comes next but has little to say; he is challenged that his knowledge of his staff does not extend to outside Lower Loxley, since he is so busy. Also that he could not expect Kathy to confide in Nigel about problems with his brother-in-law.
- Tomorrow, Taylor himself will take the stand.
