Lilian has a clandestine meeting with Paul which raises her spirits, albeit briefly.

Radio Times: Romance is in the air. Meanwhile, Lilian makes excuses.

Characters: , , , ,
  • Matt is still disgruntled about the constant presence of Leonie, currently in her accustomed place in James’ room. Lilian is dismissive: she is concentrating on making the puddings for mum’s birthday meal and has to go out shopping. What about lunch? Lilian will be out but Matt could fend for himself or ask Leonie to get him something. What she doesn’t tell him is that the real purpose of her shopping trip is a meeting with Paul.
  • Brenda has been visiting her dad, though why on earth she needs to phone Tom when she is within sight of home – which, curiously, has its curtains drawn – is a mystery. Subsequently she is ambushed by Matt who insists on discussing one of their properties right now, so she invites him in. They are treated to a surprise reception from Tom that was clearly meant only for Brenda – embarrassment all round.
  • Lilian admits to Paul that life with Matt has not been plain sailing. He tells her he only stayed away because he felt she needed space. At least their meeting has put a smile on her face but, all too soon, she has to go.
  • With Matt gone, Tom and Brenda are able laugh about the experience. Forget Tom’s wine and candles, she has a surprise for him – upstairs.
  • Lilian explains that what Matt observed, and found so amusing, is called romance, with the obvious implication that she is not getting any from Matt.
