  • Nic and the children have walked to Keeper’s Cottage, so are very grateful for a warm welcome from Joe. She is at a loose end because Will has to work so much to cover for his assistant keeper, who is off sick again. Joe is a bit of a soft touch, giving the children 50p each for sweets from the village shop.
  • At The Bull, Lilian is still not answering her phone; it can’t be important, it’s Matt! When Brian drops in for a pint, he is surprised to find Lilian behind the bar; a drink ‘on the house’ virtually ensures that he will not keep this information to himself.
  • The sweets do not mollify the children for long: it is pouring with rain. They are saved a long walk home by Brenda who gives them all a lift. Nic is desperate for the company of someone her own age but Brenda cannot tarry now, or at the weekend, though she promises to give Nic a ring and arrange something.
  • Who would have thought it – Matt turns up at The Bull. However, he does not say the magic word: apology. He wants a quiet chat, so as not to air ‘their’ dirty linen in public. Lilian, who regards the dirty linen as all his, has nothing to say. When Matt declares that the drinks are on him, that is exactly where his pint ends up – on him. What a waste of good beer.
