Matt’s charged with fraud after borrowing five million knowing C3PL was insolvent.

Radio Times: Matt and Lilian have a rude awakening.

Characters: ,
  • Matt and Lilian are woken by much hammering on the door. It’s Detective Sergeant Andy Hollander with other officers in tow, including Lisa Ramsay, Principle Investigator for the Serious Fraud Office. They’ve a warrant relating to Chalkman Crawford Capital Partners Ltd, C3PL, and soon start copying computer hard drives, and searching the house, including Lilian’s wardrobe. She asks if there’s anything she should get rid of, but Matt says there’s no point. He says Chalkman’s screwed up and landed him in it. When the police ask where Chalkie is, having found his office empty, Matt stays schtum but Lilian volunteers on holiday in Florida; “Why protect him?”
  • As the search continues, Matt tries to name drop his Assistant Commissioner golf-buddy, to no effect. In Matt’s briefcase is a letter from insolvency practitioners to C3PL’s directors. This pushes the police into arresting Matt on suspicion of fraudulently misrepresenting to the TWJ Bank that C3PL was solvent on 14th April 2008.
  • Matt’s in the clink, with Russell Baxter, his solicitor, being questioned. The police have a big dossier of paperwork prepared. Seems C3PL borrowed five million pounds soon after being told by the insolvency practitioners for a debtor that the £1.8M unsecured loan they’d made had no likelihood of being paid back. Chalkie and Matt both signed the declaration to the bank that C3PL was fine when in fact the lost millions left it insolvent. Matt’s resolute in answering “No comment” to the hundreds of questions.
  • Finally, Matt returns to the Dower House. He’s been bailed for three months. He admits to Lilian it isn’t just Chalkman, Matt’s screwed up too, big time. Is it serious, asks Lilian? Yes, this morning was a taster, the nightmare’s just beginning, says Matt.
