Radio Times: It’s the morning after the night before for Phil.

  • Shula calls at Glebe Cottage to find it in a dreadful mess from the boys’ night. She gives Phil a hand to clean up, and tells him how upset she still is about the Usha and Alan situation. Phil tries in vain to reassure her.
  • Usha leaves the house without breakfast and calls at the Vicarage. She tells Alan how she hates her father trying to talk her out of the wedding, but she can understand why. He’s known racism himself, and he’s trying to protect Usha.
  • Shula and Phil stop for coffee, but the phone rings; Jill has taken an earlier train and is at Hollerton junction, about to get in a taxi. Shula makes a quick exit.
  • Usha leaves work early and faces her father. She tells him flatly that she’s not rushing headlong and blindly into marriage; she’s known Alan a long time, and she loves him for the good man he is. Her father tries to counter her arguments, but Usha’s having none of it; nothing will stop her marriage.
  • Jill is amazed at the sparkling house she finds, and wonders if Phil has been living there. She tells him all about Sidmouth, and Phil succeeds in keeping details of his wild party from her.
  • Dr. Gupta plays his final card; worry is making Usha’s mother ill. Usha tells him to go back and tell her there is no need to worry, and Dr. Gupta says he’ll try, but he makes no promises. He, too, loves someone so much that he’d do anything to make her happy.
