Ruth vents her anger over David’s decision. Phoebe struggles to understand Hayley’s decision.

Radio Times: David and Ruth have a lot to discuss, and Phoebe has a difficult question.

  • Ruth does not take David’s change of heart about the move well. She storms at him, and is markedly rude to Jill when she appears to announce Pip’s arrival. David can only say that Brookfield is part of him; it is who and what he is. Reading the old diaries made him realise that facing challenges is what Dan and Phil did, expecting David to follow in their footsteps.
  • Seemingly deaf to Phoebe’s insistence that she does not want to live with Kate, Kate witters on about choosing designs for her bedroom at the cottage. Hayley then arrives, and Phoebe hurriedly takes her upstairs so they can talk.
  • Getting nowhere with Ruth, David goes out in the dark to clear a blocked ditch. Jill tries to explain what lies behind David’s decision, but Ruth is in no mood to listen. She thinks Jill is behind the decision to stay. No, says Jill; it’s because he is an Archer and Archers belong at Brookfield. They always have and they always will.
  • Hayley gently tries to explain to Phoebe why she is divorcing Roy. She does love him, but he has betrayed her trust and she can no longer live with him. Phoebe is very upset, and wants to know how he is taking the news. Hayley asks if she would like to come to Birmingham to live with her and Abbie. Phoebe is not sure.
